Diabetes training for parents or carers of children with Type 1 Diabetes

11th May 2020

Type 1 diabetes causes the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood to become too high. It happens when your body can’t produce a hormone called insulin which controls blood glucose.

About 10 percent of people with diabetes in the UK have type 1 diabetes. We’re not sure what causes type 1 diabetes, but it’s got nothing to do with diet or lifestyle.

There’s so much that’s out of your hands with type 1 diabetes and finding a way to remain calm and patient in moments where diabetes interrupts life is key.

It is normal to feel angry, upset or shocked when your child has been told that they have type 1 diabetes. You may experience guilt but don’t blame yourself or let others blame you. Your child does not have Type 1 Diabetes because of something you have fed them or something you have done.
